It's not that long ago that brushing twice a day was considered enough dental care by most of the population.

Look on most people's bathroom shelves and along with the toothbrushes and pastes you will probably find some dental floss or tape. Those people who are a bit more 'in the know' might also have some interdental brushes to poke between their teeth to remove debris and plaque.

If you think about it 40% of the tooth surface is unaffected by brushing, it just seems to have taken a long time for it to matter to anyone!

Gum disease is the main cause of gum and bone recession and affects over 50% of the UK population.

So daily interdental cleaning is recommended to keep dental caries at bay as well as the regular 2 minute twice a day brushing.

Now it seems that having healthy gums and teeth can have a knock-on effect to the rest of the body. New research shows that heart disease, diabetes and maybe even demetia can be linked to poor oral health.

An occasional visit to the hygienist will makes sure that any calculus (the mineral deposit formed by bacterial plaque), is removed. The hygienist can also keep an eye on any areas of the mouth that may be missed by brushing.

Periodontal check-ups can also catch the early stages of gum disease by measuring the pockets that appear between tooth and gum. Normally these are anything from 1-4mm. Anything over this is a danger sign and remedial treatment is necessary.

Adults and children allike need to be careful with the amount of sugar we are consuming as this is a major factor not only for obesity but also for oral health. Part of the problem is that there are hidden sugars in processed food and quite simply we are becoming increasingly addicted to the 'white stuff'. Soft drinks, energy drinks and even flavoured water can contain high quantities of sugar so it is important to read that label.
