But there are a host of other ingredients in your regular toothpaste; what about these?

The Cochrane Oral Health Group have carried out a review of toothpastes with triclosan/copolymer, an antibacterial agent, to see if there is added protection given by this combination. The group surveyed 30 studies containing a total of 13,835 patients. Participants were split between those who used fluoride toothpaste with triclosan/copolymer and those using fluoride toothpaste without.

The results were as follows:

• 22% reduction in bacterial plaque
• 22% reduction in gingivitis
• 48% reduction in bleeding gums (a symptom of gum disease/periodontitis)
• 5% reduction in tooth decay

Many people are, understandably, cautious about additives in food and drink and this concern often includes medicines. Thus keeping well-informed about the latest scientific and medical findings is important for all of us, especially those who are responsible for the care of others.
