Liver cancer added to list of diseases related to Poor Oral Health

Heart disease, strokes, diabetes and some forms of dementia have all been linked to poor oral health. Now they are joined by the most common form of liver cancer.

A study by Centre of Public Health at Queen's University, Belfast showed a link between patients reporting bleeding gums and hepatobilary cancer. The link is through a bacteria present in the mouth, fusobacterium. When oral health is poor bacteria in the mouth begins to travel through the body. It is not yet clear what the role is of this particular microbe and further work needs to be done.

The study was carried out among 469,000 people throughout the U.K.

Liver cancer kills 60,000 people throughout the E.U. per year making it the sixth biggest cancer killer. The survival rate is currently only 11%.
