GETTING SOME SUN CAN HELP KEEP YOUR SMILE

For most of us the sun is the main source of our intake of vitamin D which keeps our bones and teeth in good condition.

Vitamin D helps maintain our immune response in the fight against bacterial infection which causes inflammation of the gums and which can lead to bone recession and tooth loss.

British Dental Health Foundation’s chief executive, Dr Nigel Carter OBE, explains:

"People sometimes feel they are helpless when it comes to preventative measures in regards to gum disease and it is important that they know the basics. While getting a bit on sunshine should not replace your daily oral health routine like twice daily brushing, it's a simple addition that could make a positive difference.”

Of course this does not replace cleaning the teeth using a toothbrush, floss and/or inter-dental brushes but it can still help.

Remember all things in moderation as too much exposure to the sun is harmful in both the short term and long term so please make sure you are properly protected and do not spend too long in the sun.

Nice to know though that a bit of sun worship can help maintain that smile!
