Connective tissue graft

Connective tissue is removed from the palate (see diagram) and is used to replace the missing gingiva where there is recession.

The graft is placed over the exposed root, and the surrounding tissues are then advanced over the graft. This is left to heal for two weeks before the stitches are removed. Special instructions regarding cleaning are then given for the following four weeks after which the healing is complete. 
The advantage of connective tissue grafts as opposed to free gingival grafts is the excellent aesthetic result.
